Sexual Health Education Club adviser Allison Luskey said her favorite memory of the club was sharing the moment she and the founders of the club heard it was approved.

“(The founders) were so happy; they were crying,” Luskey said. “For them to start one of the first sexual health clubs in the state was really exciting. It was really cool to witness that and be a part of that.”

Luskey said the founders of the club approached her with the idea of a sexual health club and she told them she would be their staff support.

“(Advising) has been really fun. I usually try to stay on the outside of the conversations,” Luskey said. “It is one of those things where I am learning from my students and what their world is and what they are experiencing.”

Sexual Health Education Club (SHEC) president Hannah Heitzinger said Luskey is a great adviser because of the support she shows for the group and the way she contributes to the club discussions.

“During meetings (Luskey) usually will listen and then jump into the discussion if she has a question or an opinion she wants to share,” Heitzinger said.

According to Luskey, SHEC is a place where students can share their opinions, but also learn from others.

“I think the intention of this club and what kids are getting out of it is really that they have an open, safe place to have conversations and to have discussions and to better their understanding on various topics having to do with sexual health,” Luskey said.  “So it is a place for them to discuss, learn new perspectives and share.”

Luskey said SHEC is a great non-traditional academic club because it differs from the traditional health classes.

“The students come up with the topics and then the students lead the discussion,” Luskey said. “It is different than our health curriculum where it is more content-driven and more based on knowledge and skills that we want the kids to leave having. But with this, there is more student choice and they get to be the ones who are educating.”

According to Luskey, SHEC plans to pick next year’s presidents this upcoming spring.

The club’s next meeting is at 8 a.m. March 22 in B112.
