As Medical Education Development (MED) club president Hannah Wolk reflects on the 2017-18 school year, she said the MED club has been the start of her medical journey.

“MED club has helped me narrow down the field I want to go into and become more confident in my career choice,” Wolk said, “I am committed to the University of Minnesota’s nursing program.”

Wolk said junior Marian Mohamud is going to be one of the club’s presidents for next school year along with a new adviser, Julie Schilz.

“I am hoping for next years presidents to continue expanding the club and bringing in more members,” Wolk said.

According to Schilz, Mohamud was one of the presidents who asked her to be the new adviser for the club. Schilz said she has supervised a few activities for the MED club in previous years.

“I would like to have professionals from lesser known fields come in for students to discover something they may not have even known about before,” Schilz said, “I also really hope to take the kids on more field trips.”

Mohamud said she volunteers at St. Louis Park Methodist Hospital where opportunities to get guest speakers to talk with the students will be a helpful regimen for next school year.

“I am personally interested in becoming a doctor so learning about different jobs in the field is helpful,” Mohamud said.

Wolk said she was proud to be club president when she saw students who were inspired by speakers.

“You can tell when students are really interested because they ask a lot of questions,” Wolk said. “I think a lot of students would benefit from this club, but not everyone knows it exists.”’

Although she only attended one meeting, junior Olivia Mosby said she really enjoyed the atmosphere of the meeting and the guest speaker.

“The meeting was really fun because the people were very welcoming and the images that the radiologist showed us were really interesting, the CT scans especially,” Mosby said.

According to Wolk, one of her favorite guest speakers who came in to speak was the former chief of surgery from Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).

“He had so much experience and stories that were really inspiring to listen to,” Wolk said. “He also held an important leadership role being the chief of surgery which was a unique perspective.”

Schilz said MED club plans on starting it’s first meeting next fall 2018-19.
