School year brings new perspective on education

After a unanimous approval by the school board, the Strategic Plan will begin to take effect on students throughout the district.

Throughout the course of the last year the school board organized the World Cafe meetings, where community members, parents and students were invited to voice their opinions on education in the district. According to principal Scott Meyers, these meetings generated the ideas for the revised Strategic Plan for 2015-2020.

Meyers said the five-year plan consists of the school district’s mission, outcome and course of action. The Strategic Plan provides a way to educate people on what the school district has to offer, but also a way to concentrate efforts on a common purpose.Strategic Plan

Meyers said he believes the plan will succesfully strengthen the community and the academics at the high school.

“As people started talking about the same things, I started to notice the continuity,” Meyers said. “I’m really excited about that progress moving forward.”

Meyers said his course of action focuses on making intentional conversation a priority at the high school. He said he wants to insure the awareness of every family on important information, from honors classes to graduation requirements.

Meyers’s said his vison for the high schoool includes making classes available to all students at every level. He said he plans to draw more attention to life after high school and focus on how to prepare students for their future through advisory classes.

“I hope that limiting the gap between higher and general classes lets students decide what they need for their future,” Meyers said. “Students will have the opportunity to attempt classes regardless on how challenging they are based on their select needs.”

Meyers said this year, students will have set objectives or “tech tasks” they have to achieve in advisory sessions. This will stimulate questions such as “what have I done to prepare for my future?” and “what will help me get to where I want to be?”

Sophomore Rosie Colacino said she looks forward to the changes and believes “tech tasks” will make a positive addition to advisory sessions.

“I think that this is a great idea because this will help students plan so they’re more prepared for their future,” Colacino said.
