Echo investigation of sexual misconduct cases ongoing

Echo continues to follow developments in the legal proceedings regarding middle school instructional assistant Jarrell Smith and high school substitute custodian Fasel Mohamed Ali.

According to Hennepin County Attorney’s Office media coordinator Chuck Laszewski, there are no new developments in the case of Jarrell Smith.

Smith is charged with criminal sexual conduct, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Jail Roster.

Laszewski said Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 5.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Jail Roster, Ali is charged with fifth degree criminal sexual conduct. Ali was released from custody Jan. 6 with a court appearance scheduled for April 18.

District communications director Sarah Thompson said the cases have both moved beyond the district.

No additional information is available from the school district,” Thompson said.  “Both incidents are being handled by law enforcement.”

Echo will continue to investigate both issues.
