Bird Feeder sees increase in donations

Student group rebounds from recent lack of food

While the SLP Bird Feeder hit a slow spell in donations early February, students in need of food are in luck, due to a recent increase in contributions to the organization.

According to manager Amra Mucić, the Bird Feeder’s recent crisis to meet the school’s demand for food handouts has been relieved. During the week of Feb. 15, the organization saw a increase in donations, which Mucić attributes largely to various sources.

“It’s(the increase in donations) due to the last issue of the Echo, which got the word out that we’ve needed more food”, Mucić said.

Other groups such as DECA and Natural Helpers, as well as NHS, have been involved in the positive change.

Senior DECA officer Dave Herrera said the food drive competition between DECA and Natural Helpers saw positive results.

“It went well. Natural Helpers had 277 items donated, DECA had 160,” Herrera said.

With this positive turnaround in donations, Mucić and others at the Bird Feeder hope to figure out how to keep the stream of donations coming. They said they feel this could be achieved through working with other school groups.

“We really want to continue this stream of donations. Partnering with other student led organizations could help”, said Mucić. “This could help us in ways like how the DECA vs Natural Helpers competition did.”

Students interested in contributing to the Bird Feeder can donate food such as cereal, pasta, rice, peanut butter and jelly, snacks, mac and cheese, canned vegetables, and canned fruit to room B226.
