Speed of Guest Wi-Fi network limited by design

Internet connections frustrate students

The speed of the Guest Wi-Fi was constructed to be restricted, according to district information services director Tom Marble.

“Speed of connections are different depending upon how you are connecting,” Marble said. “The Guest Wi-Fi network is limited in speed by design, as it does not require authentication and anyone can connect.”

Sophomore Sophia Davenport said the speed of the internet connection impacts her work during class.

“I have noticed that the school Wi-Fi is super slow,” Davenport said. “Because it’s so slow, I often don’t use it and when I have to, it can get annoying when I need to look up something for class.”

According to Marble, who was contacted via email, the slow connections may not be a result of utilizing the Wi-Fi network available for student use.

“Slow connections can be for any number of reasons, many of which are device and not network related,” Marble said. “They can also be attributed to the resource on the internet that one is connecting to.”

Sophomore Ethan Hoeschen said as a result of the slow connection’s on Guest Wi-Fi, he resorts to utilizing his personal data.

“I have been experiencing somewhat slow Wi-Fi ever since the school did maintenance on their system earlier this school year,” Hoeschen said. “It is somewhat frustrating because if I want to look up something for school on my phone using the school’s Wi-Fi, then it takes quite a long time to get the results. Then, I end up using my data which is in short supply.”

Marble said Virtual Private Network (VPN) use to circumvent restrictions on Guest Wi-FI violates the district’s Acceptable Use Policy.

“Yes we have seen an increase (in VPN use among students). Users at school should be aware that they are subject to the school district’s Acceptable Use Policy, which outlines appropriate use of the district’s technology resources.”

Hoeschen said he believes certain situations allow for the appropriate use of VPNs to circumvent restrictions on Guest Wi-Fi.
